THE REGULAR SOLIDS (VOLUME OF) PAGE

A regular solid is a lump that has all sides the same length, all faces the same shape and the same number of sides meeting at every corner. There are only five of them and they are shown here. We were asked how to find the VOLUME of these solids. (Although why anybody wants to know the volume of an icosahedron is a complete mystery to us.)

Here's a bit of page 121 from Vicious Circles. (This is the MM book that tells you all about regular solids.) We've stuck the volume formulas on next to each solid.

"s" = the length of any side of the solid.

You'll notice that each formula has a set of numbers at the front and they all have s3 at the end!

These formulas were found by our friend Hu Yi Jie on the amazing website: Math Forum.
